<<The RBOCs wanted to use ATM and Alcatel was probably the best in this area at the time.>>

Jim, I don't know if anyone read an article in the latest issue of the Wired magazine by Steve Steinberg "Net-Heads vs. Bell-Heads"

"A big favorite of the phone companies, ATM takes the chaos-driven Net and tries to make it act like a telephone network."

The article juxtaposes RBOCs against Internet culture and claims that ATM is alien to the Net. I have a very vague idea about the technology. But the claim is that ATM is preferred by RBOCs as a controlled billable packet traffic. Another words, they ultimately want to bill you per e-mail message and ATM allows it.

I would very much appreciate if technologically savvy person like yourself comments on the article. Unfortunately the article will not be on the Net till Oct.20 (The Magazine is still on the shelves), but the synopsis is available at:

hotwired.com

It will make sense now that RBOCs want to make ATM a condition for ADSL.
