Thanks for your response. I am also a Smalltalk programmer and agree that The VA development environment is very good. Not only a better GUI but also there are also more external connectivity options to IBM back ends. In addition Envy browsers and library management is bundled in (and part of the VM).

A single tool can not be great for all purposes however. VW line does distributed Smalltalk, CORBA access, Oracle version 8 access, internet access, quite well and provides a smaller footprint. Neither tool would survive on its own as a proprietary tool. VW will always fill some customers needs better. I think it was the concern over the companies survival that kept new VW licenses down to nearly 0. Total license revenue was only $1.8 Million last quarter. There is clearly much room for improvement. Also unlike roulette investors can place their bets on two slots (VW and Parts for Java). At worse the upgrade licenses and single copy Java licenses will trickle in to offset the bulk of the development and admin costs. The services groups should be able to maintain some growth in this market.

I think there is much uncertainy still about the product sales but there is a large potential upside.

For GUI improvements try the IC&C Widget Kit or the freebee WindowBuilder Pro (if you can find it). ParcPlace gobbled up the company that made it and the product seems to have disappeared although it was a decent event griven GUI builder.
