It was his stated policy. Plus, he used to be a Putin admirer. I think these powers will be checked by the military industrial complex. I generally support him because being a Putin lover diminishes nuclear war threat. If a single nuke is launched there will be no winners. I will be lucky to evaporate from the blast. Those who survive 30 minute initial ww3 will be left to die from radiation poisoning, much worse kind of death. Trump has a record of being a peace maker, the only record I admire and respect. I hope he can stop Islamic terrorists through strength like you say he will and Putin war through negotiations.
