As of June 2024, China had 1,147 gigawatts (GW) of operational coal capacity, which is more than half of the world's total operating coal capacity. However, China has recently reduced its approvals for new coal power plants:

  • First half of 2024
China only permitted 12 projects totaling 9.1 GW, which is an 83% decline from the first half of 2023.

  • Early 2024
New and revived coal power proposals totaled 37 GW, which is down from 60 GW in early 2023.

  • Construction
Construction began on over 41 GW of coal projects in the first half of 2024, which is nearly equal to the total that started construction during all of 2022.

Some say that China's coal power boom may be ending. Others say that China has pumped the brakes on coal while wind and solar power capacity continues to expand.
