I collected more information on the bomb cyclone from an interview with an Environment Canada meteorologist.

First, he confirmed my impression that they used to be very rare on the BC coast but are becoming more common.

Second, I learned that the criterion for this latitude is for the central pressure to drop 24 mb in 24 hours. This one is expected to drop 50 mb.

We are getting lucky because the currents will steer it north one it gets about 400k off the west coast of Vancouver Island. If it had continued on its original course there would have been a lot of destruction in Vancouver and Victoria due to the hurricane force winds. Still, there will be much disruption due to flight and ferry cancellations and power outages.

Just imagine if this system was not over cold water. It would become a monster.
