Honestly, I don't really understand how anyone can become poor outside of being disabled or having no ambition. There are plenty of jobs out there.
When I was 17, I was working for Harry M Stevens selling hot dogs, peanuts, soda, beer at Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium during baseball, football, basketball, hockey and wrestling/boxing matches. I was making 50K a year, working just about every game I could. There were adult men doing this for a living. When I left for college, I had 100K in the bank. True, I was giving people a big head on their beer ( pouring the beer in a cup) and for every 3 beers I sold, I was pocketing the full price of one beer, along with the 13% commission. Ok, I know that was not ethical. But that's NYC for you. Now I am moral since I have money.
BTW, I have been to Houston and loved the people. Very friendly and super humid. |
