Bob, Did anyone explain "fracc-ing" to you yet? Just in case no....

Well underground formations opposite of which the oil/gas well bore has been pierced usually flow naturally into the wellbore for recovery. Now the target reservoir's oil/gas flow potential is measured in two factors porosity and permeability (and actually the thickness of the source rock-but that is not relevant here).

"Porosity" means how much oil/gas the little indentations in the source rock formation holds. "Permeability" refers to how well that trapped oil/gas may flow through the source rock formation and toward the wellbore for recovery.

You need both porosity and permeability for a good well. Now companies that "frac" wells try to improve the permeability of the downhole formation usually in one of two ways: either flushing acids down the hole and into the formation in order to eat into the source rock and improve flow; or hydraulically-i.e. forcing water or a water /chemical/sand mix downhole and into the formation to fracture it through hydraulic pressure, witht he idea that oil/gas will flow toward the wellbore along these newly created cracks/channels in the source rock

Fraccing may be done right after a well is drilled by the drill crew, or later in a well's life by a workover rig.....

Sincerely,

Doug F.
