Putin is an opportunist and ultimately couldn't care less about Iran. Russia would benefit greatly if Israel destroyed Iran's oil fields. That would propel the price of crude oil toward $100 a barrel and benefit Russia. And Iran would be eliminated as a competitor. This would also be good for the USA under the Trump mandate drill baby drill as the USA would make up for some of Iran's short fall.

Putin has no real allies except for himself. Trump has already given Israel the go ahead to destroy Iran's nuclear and oil fields. In a war with Israel, IAF, would destroy Iran's infrastructure very quickly, creating chaos and panic in Iran. Saudi Arabia and Israel have now established ties and are on the same page in regard to Iran. Israel, Saudi Arabia and the US will ultimately control Iran. Russia may need to be given a piece of Iran near its border so they feel secure.

Russia and Israel do have diplomatic relations. Neither country wants to go to war with the other. Each country has bigger fish to fry than each other.

Russia does very little trade with Iran - though there are some common infrastructure projects among the two nations. Sure, Russia would not be to thrilled with an Iranian/Israeli war, but they would not intervene on Iran's part.

In short: I think you are overestimating the ties between Russia and Iran and how far Putin would go to protect Iran at its own expense.
