This reminds me of the e-mab trial for Lupus in which the placebo did better than expected and effectively ended emab. Conditions like SLE and Alzheimers are tough to measure. Unlike oncology in which you can objectively measure whether a tumor has grown or shrunk or remained unchanged, with AD and SLE there is a subjectivity in measuring a potential drug’s efficacy. Try as they might to design tests to measure efficacy there still remains a huge degree of subjectivity. Add to that the fact that it is just human nature for patients and families to WANT a drug candidate to work and you have all the conditions for a placebo to do well relative to the drug. I still think that emab worked for at least some patients with SLE and perhaps Simufilam works for certain AD patients, too. I don’t know. All I do know is that it failed the Phase 3 FDA trials and, unlike IMMU and emab, SAVA has nothing else in the pipeline. So I sold all my shares at 4.58 in pre-market. Not happy but my life will not change as a result of this disappointment. As I tell people who ask me about biotech investing, an outcome such as this happens way more often than not. So this is not for the faint of heart. And as I told my sons when they were kids and disappointing things happened: no whining!
