Boglands (Crá)

I’ve been doing well with Irish series of late, and Boglands is another solid series from the Emerald Isle. Shot with Urush dialogue in County Donegal, it kicks off when the mother of a policeman on the west coast of Ireland is found dead in a bog 15 years after she disappeared. With a rich crew of local characters and a ‘citizen journalist’ podcaster to boot, all ensconced in a small community, there are suspects and conflicts of interest galore.

Although the series clearly did not have a large budget, e.g. you likely won’t have heard of any of the actors before, it does two things very well, enough to set it above the pack. First, it really manages to evoke the essence of that special part of the world. Though I have only been to the west coast of Ireland once over thirty years ago, I was often taken back to that visit as I watched. In fact, the little country pub where the characters mix and mingle is almost identical to one I had lunch at when I was riding a bike around the Beara Peninsula.

But what really makes Crá work is the well-written script. Series like this with many characters and plot lines can get confusing, but I found it easy to keep the characters and plot lines straight, with everything being tied up cleverly at the end. There is enough wiggle room tin the plot o continue on to another season, which I would definitely watch.
