Tariffs are not going to solve all our issues but they may result in a level playing field and/or the foundation of meaningful negotiation.
There's nothing "foundational" about Trump's tariff threats. They are completely short-sighted, "in the moment," and reckless.

Some people, like Fareed Zakaria of CNN (the only talking head at CNN that I respect), call Trump "transactional," but that's a very polite way of saying that he doesn't think beyond the short-term "deal."

As for "leveling the playing field," give me a break. Trump will only try and "correct the imbalances" that he dislikes while preserving the imbalances that favors him.

Other countries will do likewise, and we'll end up in a trade war where neither side wins.
