Ludwig

Ludwig is a six-episode crime series set in Cambridge, England with two lines of narrative. One involves the disappearance of the central figure Martin’s twin brother, who is a DI on the Cambridge major crimes squad, and the other involves a weekly solution of a crime by that brother.

Well, not really, because that’s where the twist comes in. Those cases are not being solved by the brother, but by Martin himself, who has been talked into impersonating his brother to try to find out what happened to him. Yes, this is patently ridiculous. Martin may be clever at solving things because he is a puzzle setter, but there is no way his ‘colleagues’ would not notice he knows nothing about being a PI.

But if you can ignore that, this is an enjoyable watch. It is often very funny, but the real heart of Ludwig lies in the relationship between Martin and his brother’s wife, realized by two experienced actors expertly portraying the shifting power dynamics and motivations of the two, not always recognized by themselves. Rather than solving the mystery of his brother, the ending deepens it, setting up a next season which I am looking forward to.
