United Microelectronics Corp., isn't sitting still. UMC, also of Hsinchu, will double its total 8-in.-wafer production from last year, to 150,000 units per month by year's end, said Peter Chang, president of United Semiconductor Corp. (USC), a joint foundry venture between UMC, Alliance Semiconductor Corp., and S3 Inc.
USC, which has an 8-in.-wafer fab up and running, recently broke ground on another 8-in.-wafer plant in Tainan. Another UMC-backed joint venture, Hsinchu-based United Silicon Inc., will move into production this year
