Hitler was named Time's Man of the Year in 1938, the year before Germany invaded Poland and kicked off World War II.

Time still has the article up that explains the magazine's rationale at the time (of course, they had no idea of the many horrors to come).

Even in the moment, though, it's clear that Time's writers didn't necessarily grant Hitler the distinction because they admired him.
