I really have to recalibrate to even think about what investing was like in 1998.
I had a Merrill Lynch account, and when I mentioned AAPL, my broker said, "Our analysts HATE that stock."
So I looked for another broker.
Datek had recently implemented online trading, so I opened a Datek account, on my Performa 6116CD, using AOL dialup.
I mailed them a paper check, via USPS, with instructions to make a market buy.
Stocks were still trading in dollars and fractions then, rather than dollars and cents.
I believe the price I paid was a blend of 28-15/16 and 28-31/32.
Dividing the dollar amount by the number of shares gives me a per-share cost of $28.95748.
Dividing that by the 112X split number gives me a per share basis of $0.2585489.
It's easier to think of as 26 cents.
Each of those 26 cent shares is currently paying a quarterly dividend of 25 cents, and has paid a cumulative dividend of a little over $9.00 to date. |
