I think the best advise for Microsoft is to embrace JAVA and stick with it. The "windows everywhere" strategy is NOT feasible from an economic, political, competitive, and consumer standpoint. Microsoft is NOT out of the woods yet. The big states, DOJ, JAPAN, European Commissioner, and growing.., sounds like the attack on Microsoft's business principles and strategy are taking a global dimension, and will ultimatley impact their "brand".
The article is pretty neutral. Some points are well-made: link to existing infrastructure and investments. The best things (information appliances/devices, smart-phones, set-top boxes, hand-held devices, smart-cards)are in advanced stages of evolution. JAVA holds tremendous promise in that "LITE" environment. That was probably what Gosling had in his mind when he created the JAVA phenomenon.
In conclusion, JAVA is here to stay, and enable newer innovations. The big blue chips, key ISVs, and leading integrators are behind it. The technological progress support that conclusion as well: support tools, faster, smarter, and cheaper processors and networks (bandwidth). |
