Me, I was buying the stuff in Dallas. I was told to stick to the name brand gas, so it eventually crept up to $.339. Then the self service brand Sello (I heard it was a Mobil product -no way to verify- but my car seemed OK with it) was selling it and $.239 and I was a very early adopter. There were off-price brands selling as low as $.189 but those, I was warned, would lead to carburetor problems. Shortly after I started driving I had to pay $20 (gasp!) to have my 1-barrel rebuilt, and I was determined to avoid that ever again.

Hard to figure real inflation numbers when you gotta compare MPG in various eras, the hassle of pumping your own gas in foul weather, the cost of a carb plugged up with bilge sludge versus a fuel injector repair that most of us have never had, and all the other moving parts of the analysis that can't be pinned down in a quickie calculator site.
