Osama bin Laden was never "our man" in Afghanistan. OBL was a two-bit Saudi rich kid who went to Pakistan and brought Arabs to fight in Afghanistan in the 80's. We gave money to the Pakistani ISI which funded and armed the Afghan mujahedeen. OBL and AQ are not synonymous with the mujahedeen. And the Pakistani ISI adamantly kept the Arabs at arms length altogether. We never worked with OBL or AQ. As a matter of fact, we stopped funding the mujahedeen altogether three years after AQ was formed because the Soviet client state in Afghanistan had collapsed.
