I think you can change reality.

During the rise of Nazism before and during the first part of the war, the propaganda machine by those in power had much of the world living in a false world. That unreal propaganda allowed the extermination of millions. It was allowed to happen because people were duped including many powerful Americans that had enough sway they caused Roosevelt to be reluctant to go to war.

Its not that the atrocities were not reality - they were of course. It was the reality of what people believed that was changed. Changed by a propaganda machine.
