IMO, Europe has moved ahead of us intellectually. We are 20 years behind Europe with regard to civilized behavior e.g. health and welfare and general ideology.

This is because the Republican party has become a reflection of the southern norms and mores which are rooted in antiquated behavior like racism, sexism and homophobia, which are also metaphors for their thinking as a whole.

After the 1964 civil rights act when the south became solid red, the south has increasingly dominated our politics. The south has the most power in the Republican party and people like Mitch McConnell worked to design our society after the southern norms and mores.

Their culture steeped in racism, sexism and homophobia, shaped our laws which were often for primitive ideas like the death penalty.

And the plutocrats have used the southern political power to get their taxes reduced by appealing to their cultural desires i.e. just like Putin has a deal with his oligarchs that he will make them rich if they leave him alone, so our oligarchs have told the conservatives we will support your ideology if you support our tax cuts.

Not quite that simple :).
