It's not that simple. you should be able to look at total deaths before covid and total deaths after covid. Are excess deaths continuing at 15-30% as in other countries?

The New Zealand population is aging rapidly. Also the population grew rapidly. Even in one year those need to be accounted for.

Excess deaths per year is about 1,200 with total deaths about 34,000 = about 3%.

About 5,000 died due to covid of which COVID was the dominant cause in 3,000 and contributory in 2,000. Those numbers are subjective but 5,000 is about right as the total. Those deaths were something like 90% over age 80.

1,200 is a huge number compared with other deaths such as car crashes = 250 deaths per year for which the country goes crazy with road cones, absurdly slow speed limits, rules galore and very expensive policing. Almost no attention is given to 1,200 vaxx deaths "Let's look the other way and .... hey look over there, the left footed Maori tree frog is endangered... We must spend $1billion opm to save them"
