The Ukrainian people had no luck ever since the independence. They were ruled by a succession of corrupt governments which cared mostly about their personal careers and enrichment. The result was disillusionment, corruption and economic failure.

In 2021, after 30 years of independence, their GDP per capita was about $4,800 per person - which was an all time high. (Current average for Europe is $54K+)

I’m no legal expert, but the post below claims that for Ukraine to remain neutral, nuke free and not to join military blocks was part of the deal.
