You get one or more degrees in the pure subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, occasionally Electronics, and that is it. You sink or swim from there. Later in my career I dealt with graduates who had degrees specifically in Microelectronics, like from RIT, and MIT but that was regarded as a luxury. As shown, George Stephenson had no formal training at all. His Railway gauge ousted Isambard Kingdom Brunel's who was one amazing engineer too.
