Most engineers I worked with did no such thing. You get one or more degrees in the pure subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, occasionally Electronics, and that is it. You sink or swim from there.

Later in my career I dealt with graduates who had degrees specifically in Microelectronics, like from RIT,
and MIT but that was regarded as a luxury.

As shown, George Stephenson had no formal training at all. His Railway gauge ousted Isambard Kingdom Brunel's who was one amazing engineer too.

If you want to bash Musk, here would be a better place to look. Have not read Eric Weinstein's stuff yet, but it sounds like the real stuff.
