They claim directed energy from distances, from across the street and even further.

Woody - think back to your science basics.

As hints, let me ask these related questions:

• Why do we have trouble getting reception on cell phones while Voyager I which is literally more than a billion miles away from Earth yet is still able to communicate using its 23 watt transmitters?

• Why are laser pointers - even though the power is a few milliwatts (thousandths of a watt) - so much more dangerous to your eye when you can look at a 40 watt light without permanent damage? Why is it illegal to (or why you shouldn't) shine your laser pointer at low flying airplanes - after all they are still far away!

While there are several answers to these questions, the main answers that I'm thinking of are two words:

Coherence and Collimation

Coherence is most bang for the buck - the energy pretty much doesn't interfere with itself - why an army marching in unison can cause a bridge to collapse, but if they were marching randomly the bridge may shake but will not break. There are much better examples, but this is what I can think of off the top of my head.

Collimation - the energy stays focused in tight beam rather than spreading out as you get further and further away.

Yes, there is attenuation over distance due to interactions with materials in its path, but with those two aspects taken care of, not much energy is required to do a lot of damage.

Now, do such weapons exist?

My learned response:

I dunno!

Just saying what is possible...
