Bill - Re: "the "slot 1" as a proprietary mechanism whose capabolities can be bypassed."
You have addressed the key issue - bypassing the capabilities of a proprietary Slot 1.
You have essentially admitted the gist of the problem. To bypass the capabilities, an alternative must be found with equal or better capabilities. Hence, AMD and Cyrix and IDT are in a design fervor trying to come up with something new that can compete with SLot 1.
Clearly, that is an admission that their current offerings are not equivalent in performance.
As to the issue of proprietary, that is a bit different. Intel sells the Slot 1 to any and all buyers. They just don't allow competitors to make Slot 1. PC buyers, except for a few whiners, could care less - they want the quality and performance and availability that only Intel can supply.
And, Intel brand name does have its own cache'.
Unfortunately for you, AMD and Cyrix are not really competing effectively so their products are not in such great demand. So, the bulk of customers - 85%, more or less, demand Intel's products.
If AMD and Cyrix and IDT combined for Slot ACI, they would have to manufacture it to be superior to an Intel product. If not, the superior product, available in quantities large enough to satisfy 85% of demand, will sell to that 85% of customers who demand it.
Only one company - Intel - is capable of meeting those market demands now and in the foreseeable future.
