At the world's largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition, CES 2025, held in Las Vegas, USA, Samsung Display made a groundbreaking announcement. On Jan. 9, the company revealed that it would begin mass production of the world's first rollable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) for laptops in April. This innovative technology will be supplied to Lenovo for their new product, the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable, which is set to launch globally in June.

Samsung Display's rollable OLED panel can expand the screen size of the laptop by approximately 50%, allowing it to be used as a 14-inch screen with a 5:4 aspect ratio or expanded to a 16.7-inch screen with an 8:9 aspect ratio. This flexibility is expected to revolutionize the portability and user experience of IT devices, particularly laptops. The company has applied its Eco² OLED technology to the rollable laptop, which reduces thickness and improves power consumption by about 30%. Eco² OLED integrates the polarizer function into the panel, a first in the industry.

At CES 2025, Samsung Display showcased various new IT OLED form factor products, including an 18.1-inch foldable product that reduces to 13.1 inches when folded. They also introduced the Slidable Flex Duet and Slidable Flex Solo, which expand by pulling the screen on both sides or one side, respectively. Additionally, Samsung Display unveiled its first micro LED for watches, featuring a 2.1-inch rectangular panel with 700,000 LED chips, a resolution of 326 pixels per inch (PPI), and a peak brightness of 4,000 nits.

Kim Young-seok, executive director of IT sales at Samsung Display, emphasized the durability of rollable products based on their extensive experience in foldable production. "Due to the nature of rollable displays, stress can be applied to the entire screen, but we were able to secure the durability of rollable products based on our long experience in foldable production," he stated. He further added, "Rollable technology will bring innovative changes to the portability and user experience of IT devices, especially laptops."

The rollable OLED technology represents a significant advancement in the display industry, building on the success of OLED technology, which is known for its superior color accuracy, contrast, and flexibility compared to traditional LCDs. Rollable displays, a recent innovation, allow screens to be rolled up or expanded, enabling new form factors and designs for electronic devices.
