I've had this concept for a character in a sci-fi fantasy book. The character is a sentient plant and resembles a green and purple Venus flytrap. It's ugly and monstrous looking but also kind of charming. Anyways, it sits there on the desk and talks to everyone that passes by. There is a sign on the desk near it that warns people that if they touch it, they will die. Perhaps not immediately, but touching it has worse odds than playing Russian Roulette and at some point it will just devour you. The creature doesn't deny the sign. But it does ask people to pet it or touch it. And if they say no, it will just ho hum along and change subject to another thing until it asks again on a different day, week, or month. Throw-out the story, several people touch the creature. Some out of curiosity, some for some advertised benefits, and some to actually commit suicide. But most touch it because they just don't believe that they will be one of the ones that will die.

As I was looking at the all time chart of BOIL, I thought of my character. Maybe I should name it Ng1! <G>
