Hi gang, some thoughts and reading for Saturday. "Act Up" demonstrated yesterday in D.C. against the high cost of HIV/AIDs medications ($20,000 and up per year). This would indicate that there is still a potential market for less expensive (but equally effective) alternative not confined just to underdeveloped countries. I also found an interesting article (see below) which focuses on some of the hazards encountered sometimes in traditional chinese herbal medicine. Lest you think that this is only a "horror" story, first read the ending "conclusion" section; there it says that side effects from CHinese herbs is less than 1%, comapared with the 4.4% incidence of side effects from modern pharmaceuticals. Also, there is an interesting discussion of the dangers inherent in separating herbal combination medicine into component parts and using the parts individually. To do this safely, the author suggests, requires much additional research--and this presumably what PRLN is doing.
