The real reason behind Trump's Canadian invasion plans The US runs a surplus balance of trade with Canada . . . except for all of that pesky Canadian oil and gas the US buys. What happens is the US refines Canadian oil, uses most and exports the rest. The US consumes all of the imported Canadian gas, while we export some of our natural gas to Mexico and some more as LNG. The US exports almost all of its own fracked oil production which is too light and sweet for US refineries - and commands a premium on global markets with less sophisticated refineries. The US is a Net Exporter of oil and gas, and we're the primary export corridor for Canadian oil.
