Sea ice cover for December 2024 | Copernicus

Time series of monthly mean Antarctic sea ice extent anomalies for all December months from 1979 to 2024. The anomalies are expressed as a percentage of the December average for the period 1991-2020. Data source: EUMETSAT OSI SAF Sea Ice Index v2.2. Credit: C3S/ECMWF/EUMETSAT.

The average Antarctic sea ice extent in December 2024 was 10.1 million km2, which is 0.9 million km2 (or about 8%) below the 1991–2020 average for December. This is the 10th lowest extent for December within the 46-year satellite record. This contrasts with November, which saw a record-low extent for the month. While the 2024 anomaly was less pronounced than the anomalies recorded in 2016 (-20%, lowest) and 2023 (-15%, second lowest), it continues the series of relatively large negative anomalies observed since 2016. It is also close to the anomalies recorded in 2017–2019 and 2021.
