only about 5,000 years of history on Santa Ana winds.

I lived in Santa Barbara County and the coastal sand "mountain" range was excellent for growing. You can dig 10' down and it's just fire mulch and sand....centuries of it from natural causes. It also has a lot of diatomaceous earth in places.

Too many homes in the fire zone. When we think about it, what a perfectly designed natural mulching system. Chaparral burns, rains cause landslides and mixes it over and over into a wonderful growing ecosystem.
