I lived in Montreal during the summer of 1976 with my wife and newborn baby while my brother and his French Canadian wife went on an extended honeymoon in Europe. We were in Montreal for 10 weeks a few blocks from Mcgill University where my brother was in Med school. This was the summer before French became the official language of Quebec. We liked it. The neighborhood we lived in was mostly English speaking, filled with a lot of students from Ontario. The French Canadians were very friendly and bilingual. We were made to feel very welcome. We enjoyed our stay.

But that was then and this is now.

My sister in law never had a desire to go back. When she went back, she had no choice. She built a life with my brother and they lived in New York City near us Today they live in Scottsdale, AZ and we are in daily contact. My brother works at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. We visit often. Our children are best friends with their cousins.
