Netanyahu Is Choosing Hamas Again
While the prime minister persists in his stance of saying "no" to the Palestinian Authority, Hamas' interior ministry announced that it had succeeded in returning all police stations in the Gaza Strip to operation. This announcement comes on top of the show of force by Hamas and the presence of members of its military wing during the release of the three female hostages.
Following a war that brought nearly total destruction to the Gaza Strip and tens of thousands of deaths, Hamas remains the dominant player there.
The reason for this is Benjamin Netanyahu and his government's insistence on not giving the Palestinian Authority a foothold in the Strip, while blocking any Arab or international initiative. Continuing in this manner will only strengthen Hamas and increase the chances that the cease-fire agreement will collapse, preventing the completion of the return of the hostages.
Netanyahu and his government can continue refusing and not present a practical strategic plan for the postwar period, fantasizing about managing Gaza through civil organizations or representatives, but reality will produce facts on the ground.
"No" to the Palestinian Authority is tantamount to "yes" to Hamas. In the absence of an alternative ruling body, the situation in Gaza will return to what it was on October 6.
