But when it comes to software, once an OS becomes accepted it becomes the base of a vast commercial applications environment thus there is some stability in the value of the underlying intellectual property (intangible assets). (Of course if copyright protection is undermined and the intellectual property commoditized, all bets are off.) Its like owning the rights to Mickey Mouse. So long as nobody can get away with knock-offs those rights have value.

Intel does not have exclusive rights to the design of a CPU that executes Windows code. Others can and do produce such CPU's. The stock price in the CISC vs RISC "inflection point" period is some indication of the technological dangers that it has already faced periodically. The biggest question for a capital intensive manufacturer of hardware is what happens if demand for the product declines. Its left with those current generation FABs and possibly having to invest in risking billions on building new next generation ones to keep up with technological advances --- all this in the absence of demand!

If there is a decline in demand it will be interesting to see how Intel handles it. They are very good at cost cutting.
