Bill - Re: " AMD would have made major inroads with K6 if they
could make more parts, soon they will make more parts."

Sure - Jerry Sanders said that on Sept.3, 197 when he first announced the "yield" problem.

That was 5 1/2 months ago - seen any resolution yet?

Re: "The technical merits of slot one can be surpassed readily."

Readily? Slot 1 has been out in the market for 9 months - where is AMD's readily available response?

{================}

My bet is that AMD has realized their design rules were too optimistic for their 0.35 and 0.25 micron process.

The K6 is most likely being re-laid out with larger die sizes to accommodate "looser" tolerances and larger feature sizes to prevent yield losses as experienced currently with "tight" design rules.

Process marginalities that weren't apparent 9 or 12 months ago are now being realized.

I expect AMD to issue an announcement to this effect, very similar to the April/May 1995 announcement that their K5 was being "delayed" due to further testing!

Basically, AMD will give up their small die size for improved yields and higher net good die/wafer. A very expensive lesson for AMD, but that happens when they "rush to judgement" on process development.

Let's see if this scenario unfolds.
