I don't look at as fascism as much as I do counter-productive. Today, maskers are doing it to show they are one of two things:

a) Ignorant of the near-total lack or protection provided, or
b) Totally virtue signaling.

There is no scientific basis for the claim it is more than an extremely marginal tool.

And I know you can point to articles that contradict me. However, when Fauci was equivocating all of the place, I took a keen interest in the subject, trying to discover why the benefit wasn't clear (even to him).

What I found was that the claim that they were helpful was far weaker than the findings they were unhelpful. In fact, I was astonished at the time almost no one found masks were helpful, and that is why Fauci said that. Before he didn't. Before he did. And didn't.

The truly funny thing that happened during this period was that some outstanding scientists in the field who had researched and found no benefit, were threatened and wrote openly about the threats if they didn't take down their articles and replace them with different findings. In one case, the scientist was told he would not be published in a major specialty publication if he refused to take down his factual article. Conveniently, all evidence of it is now gone.

It is so easy to apply intuition to this subject and arrive at the wrong conclusion. Now, it is an unfortunate fact that the data are corrupt and I think there is probably no going back.

Pretty fucking sad in an era where we know how to do science but only if it doesn't interfere with our opinions.
