That reminds me of the early days of smog systems. "Gutting the cat" was one way of freeing up exhaust back pressure. Especially old pellet type cats that could get clogged up.

JC Whitney sold what was called a "test tube" which was a bolt in replacement for the cat and was labeled for "off road use only". I had a '79 Camaro with a 350 V8 back then and I installed one of these "test tubes". Made for a straight pipe exhaust with just a resonator at the back. No smog testing where I was living at the time..

They call the smog choked mid 70's to mid 80's "malaise era" cars for good reason. Rough running, terribly under powered and poor fuel mileage was the norm back then..
