There were a couple of episodes of The World At War which covered Germany's home front. Some of the stories about war crimes and atrocities in Poland came back to the German public from the regular conscripts in the Bundeswehr when they returned home on leave. Becuase of the effect these had on public morale, Germany eventually formed specialize units, some made up soley of criminals with violent backgrounds. US/Israel's use of Islamic State to carry out ethnic cleansing campaigns has been compared to Nazi Germany's Dirlewanger Brigade. Not unlike Nazi Germany, the US took a lot of heat during Iraq war and occupation for abuses carried out by its soldiers and turned it focus in subsequent wars to using mercenaries.
