Former Brampton MP and Liberal party leadership candidate Ruby Dhalla says she will deport illegal immigrants if she becomes prime minister.

In a message posted on social media, Dhalla says Canada must clamp down on those who are here illegally.

“As your prime minister, I promise I will deport every illegal immigrant in Canada,” she says.

She says in her speech that there are over 500,000 illegal immigrants in the country.

“This is unacceptable,” she goes on to say.

The daughter of immigrants to Canada says those who have come here have helped to build the country but says the system has gotten out of control.

“But we must clamp down on human trafficking and those that are here illegally,” she says. “As your prime minister, I promise you I will deport every illegal immigrant in Canada. Canada’s comeback starts now.”

The former Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale announced her plans to enter the Liberal leadership race last week and now says she’s officially in the contest after making a $50,000 deposit and filing the nomination paperwork.

With a campaign slogan of “Canada’s comeback starts now,” Dhalla said as leader, she “will fix what is broken at home, and I will fight for Canada and Canadians on the world stage.”

Dhalla’s mother emigrated to Canada in the 1970s and settled in Manitoba. She was born in Winnipeg and went on to become a chiropractor before being first elected to the Brampton-Springdale riding in 2004.

She held onto the riding in the 2006 early election and again in 2008, but was defeated in 2011 following allegations she had mistreated two caregivers hired for her mother in her family’s Mississauga home.

Dhalla stepped down as Liberal Youth and Multiculturalism Critic in 2009 following the controversy but has claimed the allegations were part of a smear campaign.

“When I was an MP, my election campaigns were battles filled with drive-by smears, vicious attacks and propaganda from my opponents,” her campaign website reads. “They tried and tried but they failed. Instead our team won and won and won again for three elections.”
