The 1896 hypothesis was that a doubling of CO2, from 280 PPM to 560, would raise temperatures by 1.5-5.0 degrees C, IIRC. We've been testing it with data ever since then. I think the last IPCC said between 1.5 and 4.5 degrees. Today, CO2 is 428 ppm.

Global average temperature for all January 1-25 periods since 1940. It fully incorporates the period where the Contiguous U.S. was much colder than normal. So despite how cold you felt, the Earth as a whole was on fire. 🔥
