Making Austria Less Attractive for Asylum Seekers

Posted on January 30, 2025 by Baron Bodissey

Up until now, “asylum seekers” in Austria have been able to enjoy all the benefits of the health care system, but that may be about to change.

The ÖVP (Österreichische Volkspartei, Austrian People’s Party) and the FPÖ (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs, Austrian Freedom Party) want to restrict migrants’ access to the health care system, with the most severe restrictions being imposed on those who refuse to “integrate”. The idea is to make Austria less attractive to migrants.

I don’t know what the exact parameters are in an Austrian context for failure to integrate, but I would expect that not learning the German language probably plays a major role.

Many thanks to Hellequin GB for translating this article from Junge Freiheit:

FPÖ: Doctor’s visits only for integrated migrants

The FPÖ and ÖVP want to restrict asylum seekers’ access to the health system. Only emergency care and financial deductions are planned. Only those who integrate should receive benefits.

Vienna

During their ongoing coalition negotiations, the FPÖ and ÖVP are working on a model that would restrict asylum seekers’ access to medical services. According to current information, only emergency care will be provided for migrants. There are also plans to deduct part of the basic financial support for these medical services.

Another aspect of the plan concerns recognized refugees: their health care is to be linked to integration criteria. Those who show a willingness to integrate should receive more comprehensive medical care than those who do not want to adapt.

FPÖ submitted legal opinion for review

Currently, asylum seekers in Austria have automatic access to the full range of services provided by the E-Card , i.e. the social security administration system. Whether the planned restrictions are sustainable under European law is currently being examined. A corresponding legal opinion has been commissioned. The measure is also intended to help make Austria less attractive for asylum seekers.

Afterword from the translator:

The European Court of Human Rights will have a field-day with this. They’re most likely drooling already over the fines they can impose, since nothing, absolutely NOTHING is allowed to stay in their way when it comes to destroying Europe and its people.

Anyway, the idea that illegal immigrants and those unwilling to integrate automatically receive full benefits is an impertinence. If I am on holiday as a tourist in a country legally, I do not automatically receive all the benefits of the locals for free, now, do I? No, I have to pay everything up front, but I guess this is because I’m white, and as we all know, white people are exceedingly rich and don’t have to work for a living. The money grows on trees in our back yards. And in Germany, for instance, every self-employed local is mercilessly asked to pay, even without a steady income.
