I once worked briefly at a chicken ranch in Hemet CA. that was 1969. In June is was well over 100 degrees. The chickens were stacked 7 per cage and the rows were maybe 200 yards long. We would reach in, grab 4 chickens by the claw in one hand and 3 in the other then pull 7 legs out. The Mexican ladies had syringes and would inject each chicken in the drumstick area. Try doing that for 12 hours with one 30 minute lunch break!

It was steroids and they could raise a chicken to full eating size in a month or two. Any time a chicken got injured in the cage the other 6 would peck it to death and we'd be pulling out bodies as well. Who knows what else they were shooting into those chickens? I didn't eat chicken for 8 years after that.
