Second of all Cisco's products are becoming more and more software today but 15 years ago they relied more on hardware. Nothing that big of a deal. Tell me why IBM with all of it's billions of dollars and thousands of employees couldn't take Cisco's router business away from them. Saying that a company is going to fail just because there are larger fish in the sea is a mindless argument. Using that argument you would have argued that Microsoft would have been squashed by IBM. If LU and NT are so capable then how come CIEN is even selling anything to WCOM, FON and CWP? Could it be because they were slow to respond to the market and CIEN offers better products earlier? How come CIEN introduced OADM's available (albeit crude early versions) with their products almost a year ago yet LU has none to offer the world? (As far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) Lucent is behind the eight ball all the time. It takes LU a month just to turn around.
