Outside of inability to get enough participants to deliver a statistically significant result, it is most common that the trial has an obvious lack of efficacy, in which case it will be stopped altogether. But safety is also a frequent issue: If people begin having reactions to the drugs that are unanticipated that will stop a trial.

Most clinical trials are ended ahead of schedule for one reason or another. There are a lot of possible reasons.
