Harsher punishments serve both as a deterrent and a means to uphold the integrity of public service. When judges and police officers betray public trust and undermine the integrity of the institutions they represent the need to be dealt with more harshly than a citizen. .

In 2013, a former Pennsylvania judge was sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the "kids for cash" scandal, where he received kickbacks for sentencing juveniles to detention centers owned by developers who paid him bribes. This sentence was considerably severe, reflecting the betrayal of his judicial duties.

In 2017, a group of Baltimore police officers were sentenced to federal prison for up to 25 years for racketeering, robbery, and planting evidence, among other crimes.
