James,
Caliper is more of a lab on a chip than gene on a chip company. They purport to have proprietary technology which allows them to conduct chemical experimentation in microscopic grooves cut into a glass chip. Potentially allows for greater efficiency in the lab as the chip can be handled by robotics. Also potentially saves money by using much smaller amounts of expensive reagents.

On a side note, I just found the thread and bookmarked it. Very interesting.
