David Lynch: The Art Life (Rick Barnes, Olivia Neergaard-Holm, Jon Nguyen) (2016)

I am sure even the most art-savvy cutting edge folks among us had not heard of David Lunch until the movie Eraserhead was released in 1977, many of us not till Blue Velvet or even Twin Peaks came out.years later. Fortunately, this documentary about Lynch, which ends with the release of Eraserhead, sheds light on the later films and television through which most of us know him.

Much of the film consists of interviews with Lynch, but there is little ‘talking heads’; rather, as he speaks we might be watching him make his visual art using a myriad of techniques, or maybe we see archival footage of his life growing up, or of those times in general. Fortunately Lynch is articulate and informative about how his upbringing made him into the creative person he was. I would say this documentary is essential viewing for Lynch fans, but might not say much to those unfamiliar with his work.

One difficult aspect of watching the film is that there are many shots of hims smoking. Knowing that he recently died a very premature death due to this addiction makes these segments an unpleasant watch of an addict killing himself.
