Re -- Object routing is implemented completely within the confines of the OSI model and is simply moving routing up to the higher layers..

The OSI model, implies routing at layer 3. However I got your point that "routing" is done at various level's (e.g load balancing is a form of routing, and distributed caching requires another).

Re -- Specifically look into two research projects: Harvest and Squid.
