You are in part correct. in rereading my brokerage account the following was noted. ".....However if we (schwab)don't receive exercise instructions from you on the business day prior to the expiration date of a particular option contract, we may,at our discretion (but aren't required to). exercise valuable option contracts for your account."

IRAs are only allowed level 0.
