Washington, Jefferson, Madison just to name a few. They need to be judged in the context of their times.
And in the case of those three... with plantations in the relative wilderness of Virginia, it was certainly
more 'convenient' to be slaveholders.
As for 20th century leaders.. they all had their flaws, one way or the other. But yes, some were greater
than others. The Burns series deals quite directly with the slave issue.
